S.R. Crockett, 1859-1914, wrote over 40 novels in Kailyard School fashion. Son of a Galwegian farmer, Samuel Rutherford Crockett was born at Duchrae, Galloway. "The Raiders", an exciting tale of smuggling in Galloway, is probably his most popular work and a good number of editions exist. Perhaps equally popular, especially to Galwegians, are "The Grey Man", "The Lilac Sunbonnet" and "The Men of Moss Hags". His novels generally encapsulate the scenery, legend and history in which Galloway abounds. There are many historic attractions in Galloway today; hence the region's popularity with tourists. Covenanting history has strong associations with the Galloway landscape and Crockett, a minister for a period before he abandoned the job for writing, uses this background in some of his novels like "The Standard Bearer" set in the parishes of The Kells in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, Minigaff and Dalry [not to be confused with the Dalry in North Ayrshire].
